The interlacing teddy bear can be of interest already to a two-year-old. As long as you notice an interest in shoe laces, holes, poking and pushing objects through holes – that’s the age!
How it works. Give your child a teddy bear and he or she will know what to do next. He can dress him up, tie his cub, maybe decorate him with sticks or colourful strings. By manipulating his hand and weaving the string through the holes, the child exercises precision and prepares his hand for writing. Why? Because before a toddler can write his first letters, he needs to develop his fine motor skills and learn how to use his hand and fingers. This is exactly what playing with the teddy bear is for. Thanks to the teddy bear, learning to tie shoes, lacing and knotting becomes a beautiful adventure – a game of imagination.
If you also include background music (e.g. oriental and a touch of fairytale), all the senses are involved in learning to tie your shoes. This is the essence of multisensory teaching, pioneered by Maria Montessori.
These exercises are an excellent opportunity to hone many valuable skills. Firstly, the young student of the art of knitting learns how to operate his or her hands and fingers correctly. Secondly, the exercises are a great opportunity to correct the way the toddler ties bows and loops.
